Getting the Teen Girls’ Business

TeenGirls1Is your business gearing up to earn the loyalty of the young woman? The U.S. Census Bureau reports that teenage girls have an average of $100 to spend each week. Here’s a run-down on the motifs and themes they may like:

• Retro-Chic
Teens may purchase nostalgic items for themselves or as gifts for friends. Brand names are popular, like snack items, cartoon and pop culture characters. Warm fuzzy sentiments sell well, too.

Teen Girls• Sports/Sororities
Teenage girls are more likely to be actively involved in sports. But don’t think they’re playing softball. The number of girls participating in this traditional sport lost ground with over 17% fewer girls participating now than they did four years ago. The big category growth winners over a four-year
period for teen girls are: golf (up 60%), ice/figure skating (up 10%), and snowboarding (up 263%).

• Crafts
Teen girls still enjoy crafts, and the ones they like the most are all part-and-parcel of a gift basket business’s inventory. For example, some of the best selling craft kits provide the materials for teens (and younger girls) to make body shine lotions, special lip balms, and body indulging soaps, fun candles, and jewelry. Intense interest in cooking can be kindled in teens, as well. Want to pull more of their dollars? Explore the concept of sponsoring a cooking or art club.
